Alligator Leather Preservation

Alligator Hide

Alligator hide is one of the most beautiful and luxurious leathers. It is a unique material, and requires special care to keep it in top shape.

Alligator hide is durable. However, without proper care, the flexibility and appearance of alligator hide diminishes drastically. With some specific care, your alligator hide will last for a long time.

Caring for alligator hide can be divided into two main categories:

Prevention :

Avoid direct sunlight or rain, as both can damage the alligator hide. Direct sunlight and any direct heat source can cause damage and a loss of natural sheen.

Avoid getting alligator hide excessively wet.

Alligator hide repels water rather than absorbing it, but too much moisture can cause cracks and other damage to the finish of the leather.

Use a damp cloth and rub the surface of the strap gently.

To remove excess moisture use a soft, absorbent cloth. Once finished, leave the alligator hide to air dry naturally.

When using any cleaners or conditioning products, test them first in an inconspicuous place to see how your leather reacts. Keep in mind that, while polish will enhance the shine, the oils and compounds in the leather must be replaced periodically to keep your product looking like new.

Be sure to care for your alligator hide properly ahead of time. Once it cracks, it’s too late.

Use exotic leather conditioner that is formulated for alligator hide, and make sure to follow the application instructions on the conditioner's packaging.

Choose one that will replenish the oils and add water resistance. One product that works well for alligator hide is beeswax. Apply a light coating of extra fine beeswax to the alligator hide. Gently rub beeswax into the leather and lightly buff it.

With proper care, alligator hide will remain beautiful and last for years to come.
